Universal Networks supports planting of 200 trees in Guatemala and Madagascar

This month we have supported three projects all focused on the environment, as part of our continual support of B1G1, donating to causes important to us, for every order placed.

100 trees planted in Guatemala

The first project we have donated to is a community run tree nursery in Guatemala that focuses on establishing and maintaining tree nurseries, educating communities about the positive environmental impacts of reforestation, and strengthening economic development, both through conservation and the responsible management of forest resources.
Working with local groups, schools, and communities in extremely low-income rural areas, the group provides guidance on how to plant, graft and maintain their trees. Tree nurseries are extremely important, providing carbon sequestration, forest cover, increased biodiversity and giving meaningful employment to local people.

We have also supported the Food Bank Singapore, who acquire donated food, much of which would otherwise be wasted, from farms, manufacturers, distributors, retail stores, consumers, and other sources, and make it available to those in need. By rescuing food waste and redistributing it to those in need, methane that would otherwise have been produced by decomposing food in the landfill can be reduced. Every year, about 763,100 tonnes of food waste is generated in Singapore with much of these being edible but ‘ugly’ food. About 11% of total greenhouse gas emissions could be saved if food is not wasted.

Lastly we supported a reforestation scheme in the Torotorofotsy Wetlands of Madagasca, which was once one of the last mid-altitudinal wetlands in Madagascar. However, the construction of a mining road through the area has led to an increase in the rate of habitat destruction. Without action to protect and restore the unique forest and wetland habitats, many plants and animals, found literally nowhere else on earth, may become extinct. Support the planting and maintenance of indigenous rainforest trees in degraded land, and create forest corridors linking fragments of primary rainforest.
