When construction of an expansive new film-studio complex started back in late 2021, Universal Networks were awarded the challenge of establishing a robust, fibre-optic infrastructure that would serve as the backbone between the numerous studios and workshops. The site was vast and required meticulous planning to ensure the dispersed locations were inter-connected with a reliable and resilient fibre optic network.
THE SOLUTION
Following careful consultation and strategic positioning of ducts, cables and connection hubs, we specified a solution to meet the unique requirements of the project. We installed a combination of 8 core and 24 core, singlemode fibre optic cabling, with each location linking back to separate, interconnected comms rooms for added reliability and resilience. This set-up eliminated the chances of single point failure, which could disrupt production and cause delays in filming.
THE OUTCOME
Two and a half years after construction began, Shinfield Studios was completed. Proud to play a part in this prestigious project, Universal Networks ensured the installation and termination of the fibre infrastructure was completed on time, despite the challenges of working on a busy building site, meeting the deadline to finish on budget in April 2024.
In total, we installed a staggering 42km of fibre optic cable, which now weaves its way through the site. Coupled with a 25-year manufacturer backed warranty, this cabling system will provide a lifeline of communication for this state-of-the-art facility for decades to come.
Shinfield Studios now stands as an impressive studio complex, designed to service the largest blockbuster film and television productions in the world, including Disney. As one of the largest studio complexes in the UK, Shinfield Studios is home to 18 purpose-built sound stages, workshops and contemporary offices bringing creative visions to life.

THE CLIENT
Established in 2021, Shinfield Studios is a brand new, purpose-built studio facility located close to Reading in Berkshire. Dubbed as ‘the new Hollywood’, it has already filmed a host of TV shows and films across the site, including the hugely anticipated Star Wars – The Acolyte and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire films.
